The coast is strung along the road south of town, not a walkable quarter — you drive to a beach and spend the morning. It’s a trip from White Town, not a base for most.
Here is the honest thing nobody tells you first: the famous Promenade in town is a rock beach — no sand, no swimming. The real coastline is south and north of the centre, a short drive away, and it is where you go for actual sand and sea.
Serenity Beach, a little north, is the surf-and-slow-morning spot — quieter on weekdays, with a laid-back café scene. Paradise Beach, south past the Chunnambar backwaters, is a clean sandbar reachable only by a short ferry, which keeps the crowds down midweek; go early, and check the last return-boat timing when you buy tickets. Together they are a half-day, best taken slow.

Where to stay — The Coast
Base on the coast only if the beach is the point of your trip — a resort morning and evening. For a first Pondicherry visit, White Town is the smarter base and the beaches are an easy drive.
