The base
White Town
The French Quarter — where you should sleep, eat and start every day.

Everything worth doing in the French Quarter is inside a 15-minute walk. Stay here and you can leave the car parked all weekend.
If you do one thing right in Pondicherry, base yourself in White Town. The French Quarter is a compact grid between the Promenade and the old canal — mustard-yellow heritage houses, shuttered windows, French street names still bolted to the corners. It is small enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes, which is exactly why it works as a base: park the car, and you can reach the seafront, the Ashram, the cafés and the boutiques all on foot.
Stay in White Town and the whole weekend happens within a fifteen-minute walk. That’s the entire trick.
The two out-of-town days — Auroville to the north, the beaches to the south — are short drives you make and return from. You still sleep here. Cross the old canal into the Tamil Quarter (Heritage Town) for vivid painted houses, temples and everyday street life that most visitors skip; it is a five-minute walk and part of what makes staying central worth it.
Perfect for
- First-time visitors who want to walk everywhere
- Couples and slow travellers after atmosphere over sights
- Anyone doing the classic 2–3 night Pondicherry weekend
Not for
- Beach-first trips where you want sand at your doorstep — base on the coast instead
- Budget travellers unwilling to pay a heritage-hotel premium (there are hostels, but the charm costs)
- Big groups needing resort facilities and pools
Where to stay — White Town
This is the one place in Pondicherry we’d tell you to spend on the room. Waking up inside a restored French-colonial house is the experience.
